Guide to Digital PhotographyIf you're comfortable with the concept of photography but find the digital part a stumbling block, Digital Photography for Dummies will get you over the hump.

Author Julie Adair King, a photographer and graphics-software specialist, deftly explains such concepts as resolution, f-stop, and compression. She is also refreshingly upfront about the differences between film-based and digital photography, spelling out the latter's shortcomings early on. Her advice on all aspects of the field is well thought out and simple without being condescending. She informs readers, for example, that you needn't use high-pixel resolutions simply for placing images on a Web page. Such tips will come as a relief to fledgling photographers on a budget, or novices who may have thought they had to use the highest-quality settings at all times.

Aside from the technical concerns of working with the camera and computer, King also gives sound tips on composition and lighting. And since retouching is one of the principal benefits of digital photography, she spends a fair amount of time discussing photo-editing software. And while most of the examples are in black and white, the most important examples, gratefully, are included in a 16-page color plate section in the middle of the book.

For those of you considering jumping into the world of digital photography, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better guide to getting started than Digital Photography for Dummies. --John Frederick Moore--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

An excellent book for the digital photographer. The book starts with a pre-flight check to determine what is required and then takes the reader through the numbers from color correction on to various changes from contrast to tone. When done the reader will have improved understanding of what to do with the images in front of them.

In our current world of photography the work does not stop when the image is captured. The real professional photographers are able to take that basic capture and turn it into the professional photograph that they saw in their mind.

Digtial Photography Bible Aimed primarily at the serious hobbyist or business professional, the Digital Photography Bible functions very well as an introduction to taking, retouching, storing, and publishing digital photographs, as well as choosing equipment and software. Instead of a step-by-step how-to on a particular application--like most of the books in the Bible series--this one is more of a discussion of the many different aspects of digital photography. Some topics--for example, emergent technologies--get only a cursory glance. However, for the most part, the book does a good job of covering everything you need to know to get started.

Launching into digital photography means making a succession of comparisons, and this book has done most of the legwork for you. It examines the different brands of cameras and accessories, as well as the hardware and software you'll need to process the images, from printers to papers. Appendices chart out the comparisons and list 46 pages' worth of digital resources--from Agfa to Zing Network, an online digital-image community offering unlimited free storage.

Author Ken Milburn shares his experience as a photographer, with tips and tricks on how to take a good image, whether it's the basics of high-quality photography or technical insights into working a digital camera--such as compensating for shutter lag or the usually excessive depth of field. He touches on several image-editing applications, but devotes the most time to the basics of using Photoshop.

Child and Baby Photography Photographing children and babies constitutes a large portion of the business in most portrait studios. Working with young children who are nervous or uncooperative can present a formidable challenge for the photographer. Beginning with infants, this book discusses the specific details of photographing children at every stage of growth, addressing age-specific psychology and attention spans. Technical information on posing and lighting, including props, backgrounds, low- and high-key lighting, and special effects, is supplemented with advice on making children comfortable and cooperative. Special attention is given to how sights and sounds will soothe a baby and get his or her attention for the best portrait.
